History - Pioneer of Aviation

An interesting video in which the Isle of Sheppey together with Eastchurch are both mentioned. The recording level of this film is quite low so you will need to increase the volume A LOT but its well worth it to here this gentleman speak modestly of his exploits.

Rheingauz

It's raining outside and I know you guys out there are interested in model railways? My old school mate David Guscott former Surrey Schools footballer and cricketer before he retired worked for the German HF bank and often visited Rheingauz (I think Blue Nunn wine is made there?). As David's son did an electronics degree he became interested in making model railway layouts and the first he and David made won an award. David's son now lives in America so David's wife Iris has had to take over. She is in charge of trucks and David carriages!---You can tell he was a bank manager. If any of you have got this far take a look at this 'Z-gauge' layout, even the boats and barges move and are driven by a chain with magnets set under the water. So far David has produced four award winning layouts, and one was featured in the October 'Continental Modeller' magazine. Unfortunately my video is poor!

"Use your loaf" - if it's too muddy driving onto the field it's safer to leave your vehicle on the road and walk your gear over to the flight line - getting your vehicle stuck could be a real problem as the tractor we borrowed at the fly-in was returned! Poor chap below forgot to use his loaf...

Cessna 182 R.I.P

Sadly my Cessna crashed yesterday. Stalled going downwind and went into a bad unrecoverable spin from lowish height. Hit the ground vertically. Crunched in all the front end. Wings and rear fuz not too bad but not sure I can repair it as it is fibreglass. We will see. On a more positive note, my Superhero has some new clothes! He's now Ironman. Still flies great and looks cool in the air.

Comments for the weekend

Re: End Of Year Flyin anyone? 8th sept!!!!
by Seanysean on Sun Sep 09, 2012 8:13 pm

wow what a great weekend, a big thank you to Joe and Bartons for making this happen. weekends like this make me glad i am part of this hobby and am lucky enough to be a member of Bartons. They always make everyone feel welcome and part of the club - even Joe

Started well with an instruction session for Joe and Jay to show them how to put the tent up. did not go to well as Joe took it down with half his stuff in there.

The weekend was one of those times where things just worked, no plan just let it happen. Thanks to Charlie Wiood for letting Louis have a go on his RC car - there's a £200 bill for Christmas. The kids seem to have a great time the younger ones running riot over the campsite whilst the teenagers had a bit of bloke time in the tent.

The barbeque was a success and i think the marshmallow toasting ran to over 10 kids and one big Kid - you know who you are Jan. Thanks to Louise and Ali for mothering everybody.

I kept my record as Jakes Pit Crew intact, running repair on the Cardon appeared to work. Between that, running repairs on the boys foam gliders the tally runs at:
6m diamond tape
assorted cocktail sticks and carbon
4 small bottles of superglue - 10 year olds don't respect foam gliders
1 3D Buster - nobody told me the firework fired 3 inch plastic bullets - managed to get into the breach as it where not realising what was going to happen.

great weekend, great weather and great company - what a hobby

there are a few photo's to followCourage - Fear that has said its prayers

Great Flying Weekend.

The still pictures I took over the weekend and there are a good few so just press the pause button if you see something you like. Weather was fantastic and I have to say its one of the best weekends this year - we were cooking in the sun under a clear blue sky. Fair turn out for the camping as well

Sopwith Camel - Bad Landings Mods.

Lots of you will have seen the bad landings exhibited with this model - The Hanger 9 Sopwith Camel - others have tried to land this model as well but to no avail... On looking around a number of U.S. forums it was clear other people had also experienced the same problem with this model.
After examining the planes actions on landing I decided to make two modifications and I am pleased to say this plane is now a different model - which you can land fast or slow...
This video shows the modifications to this kit and also the landings done over two days as proof they work.
I now have NO dent in my pride.

Crash, Crash, Crash, Crunch

I can land my two DR1s and my Tiger Moth with no problems but the Sopwith Camel is not a Camel but a Pig.
I have to say all the landings here are by someone else but the outcome is the same as mine - always tries to be an ice skater at the end, Left, right, left, right then over...
But at least with someone else doing the flying I was able to film my own plane!

Avro Lancaster - Flying Spectacular 2012

NOSTALGIA - It was 20 years ago when people last saw an Avro Lancaster fly from the Bartons Point Flying Club field (Sheerness 1992). Now 20 years later we are honored to see another Avro Lancaster fly and hear its four engines roar over the same bit of grass again...
Mike Donnelley (MWM Warbirds) flew his plane so well it's a credit to his piloting skills. If you listen you will hear onlookers clapping without any prompting - such are the feelings this fantastic model generates in people...

My plane went for a swim.

Having a good day down the field and decided to take my Majestic Major up for a flight. I did a radio check after starting the engine and everything was fine but the tail must have lifted while I was walking the model out to the flight line. So after take off I had no control of the rudder or elevator. The plane took off with a slow left turn and was eventually blown out over the sea when I shut down the engine.
The good news for me is the plane was seen by Kent police marine unit who were training in the area, they pulled the model onto their boat and took it to the dockyard and handed it in over to Dave a club member.
Dave turned the model off and drove down the field asking if anyone had lost a model.
More good news, the fuselage was bone dry helped by the large balloon wheels and a calm sea. When I got home I had a close look at the model and the only damage was a small tear on the wing. The radio was dry and was working fine and the engine started first time.
Many thanks to Dave and a letter of thanks will soon be on the way to inspector Steve Seabrook Kent Police marine unit.

I am off to buy a lottery ticket.

Spitfire

A man will try to cross the English Channel piloting a radio-controlled plane to mark the 75th anniversary of the first Spitfire flight. Mike Booth, from Marlborough, Wiltshire, will control his 1/4 scale model of a Spitfire from a microlight being flown alongside. The replica plane, built by Mr Booth, will take-off from France later to attempt the 37-mile English Channel flight to Kent's Spitfire Museum. Mr Booth said he felt "very confident". The 19kg radio-controlled replica - designed and built by Mr Booth - has a 9ft (2.7m) wing span and is powered by an 80cc engine. The £4,000 model was initially flight-tested at Clench Common airstrip, near Marlborough, before being driven to Calais ahead of the cross-Channel attempt. "It is very large - but it's no more difficult controlling it from a plane than it is from the ground," said Mr Booth. "And for the Channel crossing it's just a question of flying it in a straight line." However, he said that undertaking the task had involved "an epic paperwork and department trail" to obtain permission from aviation authorities in both the UK and France. "We have been working on this for some months - and now that we're in Calais we're just hoping for a weather window so that we can get airborne," he said. Mr Booth added he expected the crossing to take less than 40 minutes.
