A visit to Solent Sky Museum in Southampton last week

I went with friend Dave Saich who is a full size aircraft buff to the museum where the largest exhibit is a Short Sandringham which was converted from a Short Sunderland and was once owned by actress Maureen O'Hara (now 93) and her husband. There were a number of model aircraft on display as well as full size aircraft and a mock-up of an aeromodelling shop from the 1950's / 60's and earlier. Needless to say I have at least one of the exhibits a Jetex augmenter tube !

We were given to understand that the place is haunted and there has been an investigation lasting one year . see if you can spot the ghost , it's not the first or second pictures.---No prizes given!

A place worth visiting prior to your trip to the Isle of Wight as it is right by the Red Funnel dock and an excellent pub.

No Computer Graphics Here...

As our flying field is out of action perhaps this light hearted  look at historic aviation will show how we got to the stage of flight we are at now. Remember this is a very old film and there are no "computer graphics or green screens". All the props in the film were made... I am pleased this film has been saved for posterity as so many have been lost.
It's a long film but it's interesting so get a cup of tea and just enjoy it - or go to sleep...

Old Warden Air Display Sunday 05-10-2014

Went to the display last Sunday when the weather was perfect. The main flying theme was air racing and the star of the show was the DH 88 Comet Racer that won a race to Australia in 1934. Other racing planes that flew were two Percival Mew Gulls, one red the other white. The latter was flown by Alex Henshaw for various record breaking flights as covered by the book 'The Flight of the Mew Gull'.

Sorry about the music !

If you were thinking of going to the field tomorrow (Saturday 4th) or have nothing else to do we would appreciate your help.  If you could come along with a bucket and help pick out all the large stones that have been left behind.
Many Thanks Jan

We thought it was about time we posted something on the Blog again. We had a great day with low wind and the grass was very short. A couple of club members turned up after two hours but where were all the other old gits?

Scale Day this Sunday 8th June

Reminder: Scale Day is on for this Sunday 8th June.
Those of you who came before have now had your planes statically judged (very statically!). Therefore we will start the judging of scale flying skills in the morning.  Any new planes and or contestants entering this Sunday will have their planes statically judged after flying sessions.  One of the judges needs to leave by 1:00 pm and so we aim to start the flying at 10:00 am.
We would appreciate helpers for gazebos etc from earlier in the morning.  Please make every effort to come to this event as the weather is looking good and we will have another fun day.

Scale Day : Update

Thanks to all of you who turned out for the Club Scale Day and a big thanks to the three judges who gave us their time. The judges passed on to me that they were very impressed by the numbers and standard of aircraft that they saw. With all the best will in the world the wind speed stayed just on the wrong side and it was decided that we opt for the next date on the list which is the 8th June. Hope to see as many of you there again. Dave.

THE STORY OF ROY'S BLERIOT XI

The Bleriot XI

After much abuse and ribbing, I am now going to attempt to put some photographs and a 'write-up'on the Club Blog! Deep breath and here goes!
When I got the Bleriot, it had been crashed and left in a garage awaiting repair! Sadly the original owner of the 'Cambrian' kit died and the aircraft got abandoned. It had been run with a diesel and the front was deeply impregnated with fuel and beyond help.

Looking rather neglected

There was a bit of a twist in the fuselage, it needed a  lot of carpentry on the front, recovering, re-rigging, new suspension and an engine and electrics.

The firewall and suspension looking a bit second hand!
When stripping the old covering from the wings and tail-plane, some accident damage and more warping came to light. A bit of timber surgery and a steam gun sorted the problem.
Disassembled, cleaned and ready for the rebuild!

I was unhappy with the under-carriage and did a bit of research on the Interweb. Luckily, I established that dear old Louis built several Mk XI's all to the customers specifications, thus no two Mk XI's were alike!! This left me lots of room for 'builders licence'.

The finished job on the tail feathers

Taking the easy bit first, repairing and re-covering the 'back-end' was relatively easy. After replacing the original 'closed loop' elevator and rudder controls I constructed a tail skid to keep things looking sweet.

 Coming along!

The original 'cockpit' structure was a bit shabby, so I fabricated a replacement in balsa. Due to there being quite a heavy engine ready to install, I placed the 'LiFe' battery and the 2 servos well to the rear. The fuel tank was directly over the C of G. The undercarriage was the result of viewing lots of Louis Bleriot's aircraft.

All in place with room to spare

I had acquired a Saito FS45 which I mounted on beech beams which pass through the suspension and firewall and into second bulkhead. Solid as can be. The engine servo is on the rear of the firewall and has only a 50mm linkage.

The suspension looks a bit flimsy but it works

What, have you never dropped a spanner?

Louis on board and ready to fly to England.
 Au revoir, mon amis!

Field Update - Looking SIX TONS Better...

After the six tons of top soil was laid in the hollows on the 6th April the soil has not settled any more and it's level and undamaged.
The grass seed should start to germinate with the rain we had on the evening of Bank holiday Monday and we should have a few more showers this week to keep it growing. The picture below may look drastic but the ground is level and just awaiting the grass to grow...

One for Pete !!

Sorry I've not been down for a while guys but looking forward to getting down soon.

I thought Pete might like this death bomber I've aquired LOL  .  Maiden has happened and was very eventful .

The day was totally mad at Bottisham. There was all the ingredients for total disaster  .
1st off a Nervous Rookie pilot with no more than 10 flights in total on a Jet, lots of knobs, buttons and flight modes to remember, a runway which was short and also peppered with mini ski moguls and a maiden on something from scratch

Take off was schweet and the JetCat120SX propelled her very nicely , 1/2 flap was in and my initial trim had 1.5mm down elevator for 1/2flap. This was totally wrong and after the wheels left the ground she wanted to dive rather than ballooning as i thought she would  . Ok so this wasn't a biggy but i used all my up trim left on the tx for straight and level flight with the wheels still down.
Next was full landing flap again with wheels still down which i had pre trimmed to 2.5mm down elevator! Again totally wrong and actually needed the opposite trim which again left me running out of trim on the TX, i was starting to poo myself at this stage realising yet again Joe hadn't got a clue  So i now have 2 flap settings somewhere near correct and decide to trim with the the flaps put away for straight flight so after a little peek at the tx for my switches flaps were taken out and wheels up, full throttle and some play time  at which point 3 seconds later quite a bang and of flew the 1 tip tank which are pretty big and threw the trims out quite significantly ( I'm really crapping it now lol) trimmed her as best i could and decided to cut my losses here and try for a landing knowing i got plenty of fuel if she's not looking good to go round again.

Wheels down and full flap deployed with a flyby to check wheels , right hand wheel is not locked :violin: put the flaps away and climbed to get altitude and tried for some bumpity bumps on the way down which didn't work nor did any amount of right hand rolls to get her to lock. :shifty:

Oh well lets just do it and land this thing as I'm getting more and more anxious , 1st approach was scrubbed as was going to touch down over 1/2 way on the patch , 2nd looked much neater and smooth and as the back wheels touched a small bump jolted her momentarily back up which locked the right hand wheel :D , landing was then smooth but when the nose leg touched down she broke the Piano wire pin on a filed flat area where the steering horn locks into place.

PHEW Its over ,down and not really broke. This whole flight was 4 mins but seemed a bloody eternity.

Would i do this again as a Maiden , YES , but i think when my Eurosport goes up I'm gonna have a more seasoned Jet pilot talk me through stuff 1st
