A New London Airport!!!

With all the talk about a new airport on our doorstep perhaps this is interesting...
From SRCC Newsletter.
LONDON AIRPORT (LULLINGSTONE) It was Ced's research for the Biggin Hill Heritage Trust that led to his discovery of the plans to build London Airport at Lullingstone, a project that very few seem to have heard about before. Around 1930, London's main airport was at Croydon which was in the London "fog belt" and frequent diversions had to be made to Gatwick. Because of this, Sir Alan Cobham was commissioned to do a survey on behalf of the Southern Railway, who had their own air service in 1930, to find a suitable site outside the 'fog belt', but within 25 miles of London. In 1935, Lullingstone Park had been selected. This was to be bigger than either Croydon or Gatwick and was chosen in 1937 to be the largest airport in the UK. It was to be built just 17 miles from the centre of London. Land was purchased, some of which was owned by the Kemp Town Brewery Company which also partly financed the building of the station. Work began to level the site which was more that 800 acres and 300 feet above sea level, Lullingstone Station was built a few hundred yards south of the Swanley tunnel. A short spur south of the station would go off to the west, underground to the main terminal buildings and a start had been made on this. It was planned that the main approach to the airport would be by rail direct, non-stop from Victoria or Charing Cross. There would be three runways, the principal runway would be one and a half miles long running North East to South West, ideal for the prevailing wind, the other two would be shorter, the position of the main runway is roughly where the M25 is now. In addition to the Kemp Town Brewery Company, finance would also come from the Southern Railway and Banks. All work stopped before the outbreak of WW2 and following the war it was decided to build the new London Airport on the site of a former RAF station at Heath Row, although there was no support for this and Lullingstone was abandoned for good. The station was demolished after the War, the Canopies from the platforms were used at Canterbury East and some of the ironwork was used elsewhere. The gateway of the footbridge and some of the platform can still be seen to this day along with the conductor rails being still between the tracks where the station was located. During WW2, a decoy airfield was 'built' on part of the Lullingstone site in an attempt to fool the German Bomber Pilots into thinking it was Biggin Hill. Six dummy Hurricanes were built by Green Brothers of
Hailsham and deployed around the 'airfield'. Green Brothers went on to build a hundred of these planes for other schemes. There were also dummy buildings and electric lights for the runway, the wind direction “T” and some red warning lights. Airmen were deployed from Biggin Hill at night to turn them on and off as needed and could leave-on some of the building lights as poor blackout precautions so as to attract attention.

Light levels were failing towards the end of the day but with Joe about to fly his biplane I used my two cameras to try and capture the skill he uses to fly.
One camera was placed on the top wing and the other kept firmly in my hand and between the pair of them they give a fair rendition...
Better light levels & a higher sun level would have made it so much better...
Never mind - another day.

70 year Old Model Yacht - Built By His Dad...

While walking the dogs I met up with this nice guy sailing his model yacht. Turns out this boat is 70 years old and was built by his dad and whats more its sailed under Tower Bridge and also Battersea Bridge as well - this guy was a small lad when it was done on the Thames. Felt as its "Radio Control" it had to go on the blog.

Dunsfold Wings and Wheels 2011

Got invited to this display last Sunday. There was a cold North Westerly wind and briefly the sun eventually appeared but not the Vulcan which I think had hydraulic problems. Everyone observed a minutes silence in memory of the Red Arrows pilot that lost his life at the Bournemouth show.

Duxford DH Dragon Rapides

As promised pictures are attached of the Dragon Rapide we flew in (The Silver plane) and the other Rapide also in service that day. Also pictured is B17 'Sally B' which on one side wore the 'decor' for 'Memphis Belle'.

As for the Rapide flight if anyone considers this for the future the plan should be to keep your weight under 20 stone as there are weight restrictions applicable to the 8 passenger seats. The offer of a bag of lead to correct the CG would probably not be acceptable! To get into the 'tail dragger' plane which as you can see has a very 'nose-up' attitude on the ground involves stepping on the lower wing and hoisting yourself into the fuselage using a short rope! Once inside its a bit of a climb into your allotted seat. Prior to take off there is a safety briefing by the flight company staff very much the same as for any modern plane. Escape hatches include two canvas covered circular types on the top of the fuselage with ring pulls to open them. Other than that there is the fuselage door only.

Luckily the wind was blowing straight down the runway and with bright sunshine the conditions seemed ideal. It was the last flight of the day and we were able to negotiate reduced flight costs by claiming to be 'Old Gits' and there was no argument they let us fly for the costs of child seats!

So BPMFC wives should consider birthday trips to Duxford to treat their faithfull husbands.

Due to great interest from both Bartons Point club members, the general public and
even the local police together with our member of Parliament regarding the sightings of the Flying Witch flying over the Isle of Sheppey I have stayed armed (24/7) with my trusty camera. I have kept my eyes wide open and have had the good fortune to record this stunning event again...
As all this rubbish is picked up by the search engines I just had to say this...

Duxford 14-08-2011

I have attached a video of my trip to Duxford yesterday. I took over 250 photos so the video shows just a selection of pictures from one of five hangers. I can thoroughly recommend a visit to Duxford. Anyone with youngsters may be interested to know they are focusing on entertaining children,and include showing them how to construct and paint Airfix models.

During the day there was quite a lot of aircraft movement including the B17 'Sally B', a Spitfire MK5 and a Hurricane

We had insufficient time to see everything, however we finished the day off with a short flight in a 1930's De-Havilland Dragon Rapide .

Space Shuttle Endeavour - Last Flight.

As some of you may know I have been to see the shuttle launch (STS 134).
It has been the most indescribable experience for both me and my son.
This is the last launch for the shuttle "Endeavour" and when it returns from this mission to the International Space Station it will be retired.
There will be just one other shuttle mission left (STS 135) and that is not expected to be a public event so I have been very lucky indeed - thanks to my son Martin who gave this to me as my birthday present...
I hope the video Martin made will give you some idea of the power of this event however I must say nothing can express the force of the sound we felt because the camera audio system cuts back because its so loud...

Easter Weekend

For those of you who stayed at home to polish your models this weekend, you missed out on loads of great flying, some great laughs, a couple of great falls, and all with great mates. Cheers boys and girls :)

RC Paraglider - Part 4

Got my chance to go to the cliffs today with the paraglider and after a lot of messing about I got the paraglider to fly - the guys from the Detling club were out in force on the higher part of the cliffs. My flight lasted about 2 minutes (at most) and it was hard work indeed. The best part was that I kept it right in front of me for some time and the control inputs were responsive but my lack of concentration got the paraglider blown back over the edge and the pilot took a tumble and broke his servo arm (poor sod).
Paul from the Detling lads had seen the flight and came over and offered to do the video but with a broken arm there was not going to be any control - O' well try again and see if I can break his other arm - with Paul doing the video... Watch out for part 5.

Easter Weekend - Club Camping & flying

Full sun and plenty of tan oil needed. Loads of our members families took advantage of the special price of £15 per tent / van for the 3 days.
Lots of children running around - Even Steve Hummel was seen on a number of occasions practicing new ground-handling manoeuvers for use around the aero display circuit - He was using a strange contraption which was photographed for all to see...
